Handmade Soaps

My soaps are made here in the gift shop workroom (my other lab) with rich, moisturizing oils, essential oils, flowers, grasses, herbs and hard work. The amount of lather produced by each soap style varies depending on the oil blends used. After the incubation period, the soap is hand cut and allowed to cure for 4 weeks before wrapping and labeling. On the average a bar of soap will last one month. To me, being in the soap lab with experimentation is no different than being in the kitchen lab testing recipes. You keep some and you discard some. You change and you tweak until you achieve the perfection needed to be labeled - Soap by Mary Joyce of the North Woods. Gift boxes are available that will hold 3 bars of cold process soaps. Organza gift bags are available that hold a single bar.

Cold Process Soap Varieties

The Big Softie: A soap for dry skin. Contains: Sodium palmate, water, olive oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, wheat germ oil, cocoa butter, and hazelnut oil. These ingredients provide necessary moisture as well as a protective film that prevents moisture loss. The hazelnut oil penetrates the skin easily, nourishes deeply, and stimulates the skin. This is a great soap for men and women. The soap has a light, fresh scent and is wrapped in colorful gift paper. Average weight is 4.5 oz. Price: $6.00

Powder Puff: If you are sensitive to fragrances and have delicate skin, this is the bar for you - NO scent and NO colorant. Contains: sodium palmate, water, shea butter, sweet almond oil, and palm oil. This beautiful, white bar of soap is gentle enough for baby and gentle enough for you. Lemongrass: There is nothing quite like lemongrass. The fragrance is better than fresh lemons and so wonderfully refreshing in the shower. Contains: sodium palmate, water, castor oil, olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil, shea butter and fragrance. The fatty oils and essential oil blend used supposedly help to repell mosquitoes. North Woods Lavender: This bar has a wonderful, fresh lavender fragrance and lavender flowers blended in to make it a natural stress relieving bar. Creamy Oatmeal Treat: There is no cleaner way to have dessert. Contains: sodium palmate, water, almond oil, golden jojoba oil, palm oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, oatmeal and fragrance. It is a "cookie" for the skin with lather instead of frosting. It has a light, fun fragrance of almond biscotti with a creamy beige color. This is also available with a vanilla scent. Bon Appetite! Ocean Pearls: Fresh ocean breezes come to mind with the use of this refreshing luxury soap. The addition of mica gives a slight pearlescence to this white bar. Lavender Pearls: A lighter touch of lavender fragrance with just a sprinkle of flowers on top, and the addition of mica for pearlescence make this white luxury bar very different from the stress relieving North Woods Lavender. Shampoo Bar: A shampoo should condition your scalp as well as your hair. This creamy bar will do just that and it smells so fresh and clean. If your skin is sensitive, this is a really nice shampoo for you. Contains: sodium palmate, water, wheat germ oil, castor oil, golden jojoba oil, palm oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, shea butter, cocoa butter and fragrance. Lather up and feel the difference. Acne Bar: This bar has a light gray color caused by the clay that is used. This special clay helps to absorb impurities from the skin. There is also a slightly medicinal scent. This is a result of the blend of essential oils used that reportedly helps to relieve pain. Other ingredients have astringent and antiseptic properties. Contains: sodium palmate, olive oil, palm kernel oil, rice bran oil, grapeseed oil, water, beontonite clay, lavandin essential oil, niaouli essential oil. I can't claim that this soap will cure acne, but it should help your skin feel and look better. Price: $7.00

The Huckleberry Swirl: The north woods are famous for huckleberries. Here is another way to enjoy them in this mild, creamy, luxury bar with a deep purple swirl and a fresh picked huckleberry scent. Contains: sodium palmate, water, almond oil, golden jojoba oil, palm oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, shea butter and fragrance. It is wrapped in colorful gift paper. Average weight is 4.5 oz. Total Indulgence: This is the ultimate for luxury in a bar of soap. A soap with great lather, a color swirl and an amazing blend of rich, nourishing ingredients. Contains: sodium palmate, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, castor oil, cocoa butter, coconut oil, olive oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, shea butter. Total Indulgence is currently available in two fragrances - Lavender Indulgence with a lavender swirl and Mayan Gold Indulgence with a touch of gold mica. Shaving Bar: My son has sensitive skin and requested a bar of soap for shaving so here it is. He says that his face has never felt better and his girlfriend likes how soft his skin feels. This is a nice lathering, unscented bar with excellent slip for the razor and skin conditioning properties. Contains: sodium palmate, water, palm oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and clay. North Woods Aloe Vera: This is a nice soap with great lather for anytime use, but especially soothing for sunburned, windburned or chapped and irritated skin. It is made in pine cone motiff molds and has a clean fresh scent. The color is a translucent gold. Contents: Aloe Vera M & P base, fragrance. It is wrapped in clear plastic wrap. Average weight is 5.0 oz. Price: $3.00

Perfect Legs: This is an oval bar with an embossed rose pattern. The soap has a goats milk base that creates a great lather for shaving your legs. Flip the bar over and you have a finely ground oatmeal layer that works a an exfoliator. Your legs will be silky smooth. The color is beige. The fragrance is a delightful maple sugar. Contents: goat's milk M & P base, fragrance oil, oatmeal. It is wrapped in clear plastic wrap. Average weight is 4 oz. Price: $3.00

Garden Scrub: The creases in your fingers that never come clean after gardening (or other dirty work) will no longer be a problem. Garden Scrub has a goats milk base with coarsely ground oatmeal that becomes a natural scrubber. I keep a bar at the kitchen sink. This bar also is oval with the embossed rose, beige in color and the maple sugar fragrance. Contents: goat's milk M & P base, oatmeal, fragrance oil. It is wrapped in clear plastic wrap. Bath Salts that Pamper

Bali Sea Salts: For the people of Bali, the sea is considered sacred water. It is used in Balinese ceremonies and purification rituals. Many in Bali believe that the sea has the power to both purify and sanctify.

Traditional Bali sea salts are famous for the ancient methods used to produce the crystals. The Balinese only dry during the warm months as the sun is essential for the drying process. The sea water is placed in tree trunks (specially hollowed out for this process) for evaporation, which takes approximately one week. Then the solid crystals are carried to a drying platform and stored in a grass hut to be dried further by a coconut husk fire. Finally, the salt crystals are sun-dried again.

Due to this unique and labor intensive process, the texture of the salts will vary. The Bali salt crystals are porous and lightweight. They dissolve quickly in water and have a light gray color. Bali Sea Salts $5.25

Pacific Sea Salt: This is a fine grained salt which is solar evaporated from the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The resulting salt is a beautiful white crystal.

The salts come in round plastic jars with black lids. The average weight is 8 ounces. Lip Butter: Currently my exceptional lip butters are in flavors of Vanilla, Toasted Marshmallow, Latte, and Butter Creme. When you use them, you will taste a little sweetness. This sweetness is from the herb stevia - a natural sweetner. It's soothing and protecting properties are mazing. Dry, chapped lips will become a thing of the past. The fun flavors are a bonus. The lip butters are available in chapstick style roll-up tubes and butterfly shaped pots. Contents: beeswax, shea butter, stevia, sweet almond oil and flavor. Price: $2.50

Whipped Sugar Scrub: Use this scrub made with crystals of white sugar for any exfoliating needs. It has a fresh scent with a foaming cleanser base. It makes your skin feel like silk. Contents: glycerin, distilled water, sodium cocoyl isethionate, corbitol, propylene glycol, disodium lauryl sulfosuccinte, stearic acid, sodium chloride, sodium pentelate, tetrasodium etidronate, sugar, sweet almond oil, and fragrance. Lotion Bar: The lotion bars are a great anywhere moisturizer, however, for me they are a real "treat for the feet." I keep a bar in a soap dish on the bedside table. The last thing I do at night is to slowly rub it on my feet for a spa treatment. It's wonderful. Use a pedicure file to remove rough skin and then start to use your lotion bar. Lotion bars have a light, clean scent and come in the shape of butterflies or honeycombs with a bee. These shapes are easily held in the palm of your hand. To use, hold bar in your hand and slowly rub on dry skin areas. Your body heat will turn the solid bar into lotion. It is especially good for feet, heels, knees and elbows. Contents: Shea butter, beeswax, golden jojoba oil, and fragrance. Average weight is 3.5 oz. It is wrapped in clear plastic wrap. Price: $4.95

For Christmas, Greg's mom gave me the lotion bar from Mary's Place, because she uses it on her feet. Who doesn't want less dry feet?? Well, I have always had dragon dry elbows, even using pumice and lotion. Greg's Mom uses it on her feet (and maybe elbows too) before she goes to bed, keeping it on her nightstand. I however was afraid Dolly (the cat who will eat anything) would get to it, so I keep it in the bathroom, and after using my pumice very lightly, I use the lotion bar when I get out of the shower, every day. It's quicker and easier than lotion or cream. My elbows are normal now. It amazed me.I have battled this for as long as I can remember, using several different products, with little or no success. I called Mary today because the shop is 2 hrs from me and I know I'm gonna want more! Mary says she will ship. She also said her lip butters are really good too.When I order, I'm gonna get the lip butter too. Anyway, Flo (Greg;s Mom) gave me a little soap dish to keep the bar in. It is amazing, really. It smells nice; is a bit greasy, but absorbs quickly. I'm a night shower-er so it works out well. Anyway, try it ladies, its amazing, too good to keep to myself. Deb
