Something New From Gramma Agoo....
AKA MARY PELZEL
The Beginning of Gramma Agoo
It all started with a marriage proposal in a helicopter hovering over the Harbor Bridge in Sydney, Australia. About a year was needed to plan the Cinderella fairytale wedding that took place in the historic Old Garrison Church of the same town and country. There, our daughter, Danielle, married her Prince Charming, Peter.
The young couple settled into married life in Dallas, Texas. This is where the girl from Selah, Washington had met her man from Sydney, Australia. The only thing missing from this happy family was a puppy. I knew that Peter wanted a golden lab. However, I was surprised when I received the call that I would be needed in Dallas in December because they were getting a puppy. How gullible can one get!
The reality of what we were being told set in and I was so excited that I almost wet my pants. We went to Dallas for Thanksgiving. My husband, David, had to return after one week for business, but I stayed for 6 weeks. November 30, 2009 we welcomed our grandson Peyton into our world. The fact that I was there through labor and delivery made me a witness to the miracle of the circle of life – what a cherished moment of a lifetime!
When my daughter asked me, “What do you want Peyton to call you?” I had to stop and think. The Australian grandma wanted to be called Nana, so that choice was taken. I settled on simply Gramma.
The last week of my stay, Baby Peyton spent his nights with me in the guest room so that the new parents could get some much needed sleep. Peyton was still getting up about every three hours. One night he was especially restless, not fussy, just socially awake. I made a nest with an extra comforter for him on my bed. He loved it and snuggled in. We “visited” for quite awhile. This five-week old little boy was trying so hard to communicate with me. All of a sudden, he thrust out his little chin and said, “Ah-ah-agoo!” I couldn’t believe my ears! Peyton’s first words! It sounded just like Gramma to me. It was the beginning of Gramma Agoo.
